BAYHOST: EUR 992 a month for a master’s degree or research in Bavaria

The Bavarian Academic Center for Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe (BAYHOST), funded by the Free State of Bavaria, has announced its one-year scholarship program for the 2027/28 academic year. The program aims to strengthen academic exchange and scientific cooperation between Bavaria and Central, Eastern, and Southeastern European countries.

Successful applicants will receive €992 per month (€11,904 per year) to cover living and educational costs in Bavaria. Scholars who have at least one child are entitled to an increased allowance of €1,152 per month (€13,824 per year). Under standard program regulations, this one-year funding can generally be extended twice for up to a total duration of three years.

The deadline for first-time applicants is December 1, 2026. Applicants seeking an extension of an existing scholarship must submit their documents by February 28, 2027.

What is funded

The program provides financial support for postgraduate studies at state or state-funded higher education institutions located across Bavaria. Eligible educational pathways include standard Master’s degree programs, doctoral research (PhDs), and one-year research stays.

The financial grant is delivered as a monthly stipend designed to support academic and living expenses. Beneficiaries receive €992 per month, whereas fellows with children receive €1,152 per month. In general, the one-year scholarship can be renewed twice, supporting study or research periods for up to three years.

Who can apply

Eligible applicants must be graduates holding citizenship of one of the designated partner countries in Central, Eastern, and Southeastern Europe. These include Ukraine, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Russia, Serbia, and Slovakia.

Applicants with Czech citizenship are requested to contact the Bayerisch-Tschechische Hochschulagentur (BTHA) directly. The call is open to both individual researchers and graduates aiming to enroll in or conduct work at Bavarian higher education institutions.

Conditions and requirements

Candidates must pursue their degree, doctoral track, or one-year research stay specifically at a state or state-funded higher education institution in Bavaria. Independent verification of institutional eligibility within Bavaria is essential prior to filing the application.

Submission of complete documentation before the strict closing date is a prerequisite. Late or incomplete applications will be excluded from the evaluation process without further consideration.

How to apply

Applications must be completed and submitted exclusively online via the StipSys platform form. First-time candidates must finalize their online submissions by December 1, 2026, while renewal applications must be filed by February 28, 2027.

Practical tip. Review all required document templates – including guidelines for the Letter of Endorsement and expert opinions – well before the December deadline to ensure Bavarian host institutions can complete and sign them on time. Technical or documentation omissions in the StipSys portal cannot be rectified after the closing date.
