EIC Pathfinder: the earliest stage of a breakthrough technology

Pathfinder is the rung of the EIC furthest from the market. What is funded here is the idea of a technology rather than a product: something with no prototype yet, whose odds of success are deliberately low.

That matters for expectations. A Pathfinder evaluator does not ask about the business model and does not expect a letter from an investor. The question is how genuinely new the underlying principle is, and what happens if it works.

Two parts of the strand

Pathfinder Open – no set topic: you propose your own direction. A consortium applies.

Pathfinder Challenges – against specific challenges defined by the annual work programme. Here a single applicant may apply.

This often surprises people: the open part requires a consortium, the thematic part does not.

Money and model

The strand's 2026 budget is around €262 million and the grant is up to €4 million. It is a research action, so the rate is 100% of eligible costs, and payment follows the lump sum model: the money is tied to completed work packages rather than to receipts.

What comes after Pathfinder

The logical continuation is EIC Transition, which is entered precisely with Pathfinder or ERC Proof of Concept results. The sequence is by design: the EIC was built as a staircase from idea to market, and each step has its own entry ticket.
