7 research grants and scholarships open until March 2027

Seven programmes for Ukrainian researchers, lecturers and research institutions that are accepting applications now. Deadlines run from 28 October 2026 to 4 March 2027, and the formats differ widely: from a EUR 992 monthly scholarship in Bavaria to a Horizon Europe consortium grant of EUR 7.5 million.

Ukraine is eligible directly in all seven. In the three scholarships the researcher applies in person, in COST and ERC a Ukrainian institution can act as host, and in the two Horizon Europe calls Ukrainian organisations join consortia on equal terms with European ones and can coordinate them.

The programmes are grouped by format: individual scholarships first, then EU networks and personal grants, and finally the large consortium calls. A comparison table follows the descriptions.

Scholarships and research stays for individual researchers

Fulbright Research and Development Program 2027–2028: full funding

The Fulbright Program in Ukraine, founded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education, funds research stays of six to nine months at U.S. universities and research centres. It covers a living stipend, return airfare and health insurance. The deadline is 1 November 2026.

Ukrainian citizens holding a Candidate or Doctor of Sciences degree, or with equivalent professional standing, can apply. Researchers based abroad are eligible too, provided they left Ukraine after 24 February 2022.

A practical note. Start by writing to a specific academic at the host university. A plan tied to a particular lab, archive or dataset explains why the research has to happen in the U.S., and that is the main question the application must answer.

DAAD scholarships for the 2027/2028 academic year

The German Academic Exchange Service has updated its list of programmes for 2027/2028 and opened applications, with the latest deadline in the list on 16 November 2026. The package depends on the specific programme and usually includes a monthly stipend, travel and insurance.

A practical note. DAAD works as a catalogue of programmes, with different dates and requirements for master’s students, doctoral candidates and senior researchers. Check the date for your own line, because some programmes close earlier than the overall deadline.

BAYHOST: EUR 992 a month in Bavaria

The Bavarian Academic Center for Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe, funded by the Bavarian government, pays EUR 992 a month, or EUR 11,904 a year. Scholars with children receive EUR 1,152 a month. It funds a master’s degree or a research stay at Bavarian universities, and the deadline is 1 December 2026.

EU networks and personal grants

COST Open Call 2026: around EUR 690,000 for a four-year network

The COST Open Call accepts proposals until 28 October 2026, 12:00 Central European Time. It will fund up to 80 new COST Actions, four-year research networks, with an indicative budget of EUR 690,000 per Action.

COST funds networking: meetings, short-term scientific missions, training schools and publications. The research itself stays outside its budget. Ukraine is a COST member, so Ukrainian researchers can initiate an Action or join one.

A practical note. A strong COST proposal shows that the network fills a gap between research that is already funded. The list of running Actions is public, so check before drafting whether a network on your topic already exists, because duplicates get rejected.

ERC Consolidator Grant 2027: up to EUR 2 million over five years

The European Research Council opened the ERC-2027-CoG call on 24 September 2026, with a deadline of 12 January 2027. The call budget is EUR 618 million and the Council plans around 296 grants. A standard grant reaches EUR 2 million over five years.

Researchers who defended their PhD 5 to 15 years before 1 January 2027, that is between 1 January 2012 and 31 December 2021, are eligible. Ukraine is associated to Horizon Europe, so a Ukrainian university or institute can serve as host institution.

A practical note. Under the 2027 rules a researcher submits only one ERC proposal per work programme. Anyone eligible for both the Starting and the Consolidator Grant has to pick one call, so make that decision before drafting begins.

Horizon Europe consortium calls

Advanced materials to substitute critical raw materials: EUR 6–7.5 million

The Horizon Europe call on materials that cut Europe’s dependency on critical raw materials opened on 22 September 2026, with a deadline of 2 February 2027. The topic budget is EUR 36 million and the contribution per project runs from EUR 6 to 7.5 million, so five or six consortia will receive funding.

Excellence Hubs: EUR 1.5–4.5 million for Widening countries

Topic HORIZON-WIDERA-2027-04-WIDENING-01 opened on 2 September 2026, with a deadline of 4 March 2027 at 17:00 Brussels time. The action type is CSA, the procedure is single stage, and the contribution per project runs from EUR 1.5 to 4.5 million. Ukraine belongs to the Widening countries this part of the programme targets.

A practical note. A CSA funds coordination, and the research itself stays outside its scope. An Excellence Hubs grant goes into building a regional ecosystem where universities, business and local authorities follow a shared strategy, so build the proposal around that strategy.
